Our dream start to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League has been cut short as we are now unable to win this season’s championship following a goalless draw with reigning champions, Vipers.

What happened

Both halves of the game ended without a single goal as we both settled for a point in our Matchday 28 at the MTN Omondi Stadium – Lugogo against Vipers.

How it happened

The game began with a clear intent and desire as we pushed for a breakthrough. In the seventh minute, Okocha delivered a well-weighed corner, only for Mugalu’s header to narrowly miss the target by inches.

It remained a battle for ball possession in the midfield, with NEC showing glimpses of coordinated passes amongst themselves but failing to find a breakthrough. Mugalu attempted a long shot aimed at the goal, but once again it went wide. Karisa tried to bypass Gideon Odongo, but the firm left-back stood his ground, denying Karisa any space.

Barni and Kiyemba combined well in defense, their alertness to both aerial and ground attacks never waning throughout the game. Ssebaggala remained our midfield architect, ensuring precise distribution of the ball, left, right, and center. His effort in the 35th minute was saved by the goalkeeper, sending us into the break goalless.

As the second half progressed, Mbalangu made pivotal decisions, swapping out key players to inject fresh energy into the team’s attack. Kavuma and Shamir entered for Okocha and Mugalu, signaling a strategic change in the dynamic on the pitch. Tensions escalated as Ibrahim Thembo received a yellow card, adding to the fervor of the match. Moments later, Cromwel was substituted off, further altering the dynamics on the field as Kayanja replaced him. Kelvin Barni received a booking, highlighting the fierce competition between the two sides.

As the final whistle blew, neither team could break the deadlock, and the match ended in a draw.

What it means

This draw ends our StarTimes Uganda Premier League title hopes.
