In an exclusive interview with NEC FC media, Head Coach Hussein Mbalangu shared his thoughts on the squad for our StarTimes Uganda Premier League opener against Mbarara City FC.

….on opening the season away from home

Good afternoon, and thank you for having me here. We planned well for this trip and arrived early, ensuring a safe journey and ample rest for the team. Our preparations have been meticulous over the past 8 weeks, and this away game is no different. We understand the significance of this match, especially considering the history between the two clubs. Last season, both clubs were in the FUFA Big League, and in our previous encounters, there were no winners – from a goalless draw at the Coffee Grounds in Bugoloobi to a one-all draw in Kakyeka. The team is brimming with energy, and we believe it’s our turn to secure maximum points.

….on having a 21-man squad

We’ve introduced some new faces to the club, and our squad selection was based on current form and fitness. Every player in the squad, whether starting or on the bench, is physically and mentally prepared for the task at hand. Everyone is eager to contribute, and we’re particularly pleased that our Captain, Kavuma Marvin, and Ssesaazi Sulaiman, are fully recovered and fit to play.

….on Kakooza Hood’s last-minute withdrawal from the squad

Kakooza Hood was unfortunately not feeling well, and we prioritize the health and well-being of our players. He missed our game against Makerere University last week due to his condition. However, Gavin Mubutu has stepped in to replace him, and we are confident in the squad’s readiness for the challenge in Mbarara.

….on injuries in the squad

As for injuries, Kakooza has joined Mato and Kiberu Tonny, who are still undergoing rehabilitation. We are hopeful that we’ll have them back in action soon. In Kakooza’s case, we expect him to return before our home game against Busoga United. We wish them all a speedy recovery.
