NEC FC return to Startimes Uganda Premier League action on Thursday, 8th October 2026, when they host Express FC in Matchday 5 at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
The fixture marks the return of league football after a close to three weeks international break, a period that gave the NEC FC technical staff valuable time to assess the squad and fine-tune preparations ahead of the demanding run of fixtures.
The Diehards enter the contest in confident mood after signing off before the international window with an emphatic 4-1 victory over URA FC. The result extended their unbeaten start to the campaign and lifted them to second place on the 18-team table with 10 points from four matches.
With the league now resuming, NEC FC will be determined to maintain that momentum, secure another maximum at home and keep their ambitions firmly on course.
International experience boosts the Diehards
NEC FC were represented on the Uganda Cranes squad during the international break by goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo and forward Richard Basangwa.
The duo featured as Uganda continued preparations for the AFCON 2027 campaign, with the Cranes also playing two international friendly matches against DR Congo.
Their return provides a timely boost for the Diehards as they prepare to resume domestic competition.
Night football returns to Lugogo
Thursday’s encounter will also usher in a new chapter at the MTN Omondi Stadium this season, with the return of night football to Lugogo.
Following FUFA’s approval of the stadium’s floodlights, the venue has been cleared to host night matches, making Thursday’s fixture the first floodlit game at MTN Omondi Stadium this season.
The atmosphere is expected to be electric as the Diehards return home under the lights.
Express FC seeking a second win
Express FC head into the encounter looking for their second victory of the campaign.
The Red Eagles went into the international break with a point after playing out a 1-1 draw with Kitara FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. They currently sit 11th on the 18-team table with four points, having recorded one win, one draw and two defeats.
Express have found the net in only two of their four league matches so far; a 2-0 victory over KCCA FC and the recent 1-1 draw against Kitara FC.
They will therefore be looking to improve their attacking fortunes and return to winning ways when they visit Lugogo.
The fixture carries added significance, with the NEC FC squad featuring several players who previously represented Express FC.
Richard Basangwa, Muhammed Kagawa and Hakim Wandera are all familiar faces to the Red Eagles, although Wandera will not feature due to injury.
There is also a reunion on the touchline, with NEC FC Head Coach Kaddu Badru Mukasa having previously coached Express FC at the beginning of the previous campaign before making the switch to the Diehards.
Team News
The Diehards have received a major boost with the return of Richard Basangwa and Hannington Ssebwalunyo from Uganda Cranes duty.
However, Hakim Wandera will miss the encounter through injury.
The rest of the squad is fully fit and available for selection.
What the Manager Said
“Once upon a time I was at Express FC, but now I’m in the Diehard family with different objectives. We are focusing on any opponent that comes against us; we have to ensure we get a good result.”
Head-to-Head
Thursday’s fixture will be the seventh meeting between NEC FC and Express FC in the Startimes Uganda Premier League.
The previous six encounters have produced an evenly balanced record, with the Diehards registering two wins, two draws and two defeats.
Last season, neither side managed to claim bragging rights, with the two league meetings ending in goalless draws.
The Diehards will now be looking to break that deadlock, maintain their unbeaten start and make their return under the floodlights a memorable one.
