StarTimes Uganda Premier League Saturday 18 April 2026, MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo

Basangwa’s clinical first-half finish was enough to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Maroons as we kept a clean sheet and moved up to sixth place in the Uganda Premier League table.

The three points saw us leapfrog Police FC and draw level with fifth-placed UPDF, maintaining our strong push towards the upper reaches of the standings.

The first half

We started the game with good intent and created several dangerous moments in the opening period.

Wandera’s inviting free-kick into the box on seven minutes was well met by Buule, but his header was cleared away, resulting in a corner that Maroons defended well. Kagawa went close shortly afterwards, while a swift counter-attack on 12 minutes saw the ball worked cleverly to Dhata on the right.

His sharp first touch created the opening for Ssekamatte, but the final shot lacked the necessary precision and rolled wide for a goal kick. Our persistence paid off in the 37th minute when Basangwa finished off a beautifully constructed team move, converting after some excellent, quick interplay. It was a resultant ball back into play after Kagawa’s shot hit the bar and back into play and well finished off inside the box to give us a deserved lead.

Just before the break, Kagawa produced a brilliant piece of individual skill, dribbling past three Maroons defenders before setting up Joseph Dhata, whose effort flew just over the bar.

Second Half

Ssekamatte was replaced by Emmanuel Kulange at half-time as we looked to freshen up the attack. Kiyemba caused problems with his overlapping runs down the right, combining well with Dhata before firing an effort just inches wide of the target.

Joseph Dhata received a yellow card in 52 minutes and was later replaced by Kawawa, who was himself shown a yellow card later in the half.

In the 77th minute, we made further changes with Kavuma Marvin and Obuya Pius coming on for Kagawa and Kulange respectively.

From that point on, the focus shifted firmly to professional match management. The team remained disciplined, controlled the tempo and defended with organisation and resilience to see the game out comfortably, preserving the clean sheet and securing a vital three points.
