In a league often dominated by established teams, NEC FC has defied expectations in our inaugural season in the top-flight football arena. With 11 games played, the diehards have collected an impressive 20 points, averaging 1.8 points per game. This is not the typical story of a new entrant; we are making waves and challenging the status quo.
The recent encounter against BUL FC, though ending in a one-all draw after we conceded an 86th-minute equalizer, showcased what we are up to. Okocha’s opener left spectators in awe, emphasizing the team’s ability to compete at the highest level. The disappointment of dropping two points was palpable, but it only fuelled the determination to bounce back stronger in the upcoming fixtures.
Over the last four games, we have exhibited resilience, collecting five points. The journey included a loss against Kitara, a triumphant victory against URA, and hard-fought draws against both Wakiso Giants and BUL FC. These results underscore the great character of the team, highlighting unity, solid coaching, and effective leadership.
The clash with Wakiso Giants proved to be a significant test against a possession-oriented team. Despite encountering numerous efforts from Wakiso Giants including a clearance on the goal line, we secured a valuable point, providing a blueprint for facing teams with a similar playing style in the future.
A lengthy road trip to Masindi, despite not securing a win, brought smiles to the faces of the team, technical staff, and everyone associated with NEC FC. Controlling the game, creating numerous chances, and displaying a cohesive style indicated that the team is evolving and goals are on the horizon.
Coach Hussein Mbalangu, a guiding force behind NEC FC, refused to accept a mere point in two games. Facing the tax collectors, URA, with a new playing style, we orchestrated a high-intensity pressing game that left URA struggling to find their rhythm. The diehards emerged victorious, scoring two beautiful goals and maintaining a clean sheet, a Mbalangu tactical masterclass.
The subsequent challenge against table leaders BUL FC at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru was a clash of titans. The match produced moments of brilliance from both sides, with Okocha’s opener leaving the commentator stunned. His words encapsulated the electric moment, “Ssebaggala, looking for the Brigadier Okocha, Okocha with a shot, Okocha picks the goal, Okocha is once again adorning himself in the love and joy of NEC football club. How many times have we seen this man sprint!! How many times has he been the one that opens the lead way for NEC to get to the fore front!! Rashid Okocha nets his second goal of the season and puts NEC in the lead.” Before the opener, Okocha had already tested the target twice and almost doubled our lead in the second half only for the goalkeeper to deny him once again.
Despite the breathtaking performance, the match ended in a one-all draw. Proud of our display, we are gearing up for the next encounter against Express FC on December 21 at the MTN Omondi Lugogo.
As the diehards continue to redefine expectations, the technical staff, led by Coach Mbalangu, is committed to refining areas that could secure maximum points. The remarkable journey is not just about the points on the table but the narrative we are scripting in Ugandan football history.
In a season filled with surprises, we stand tall as a force to be reckoned with. The passion, resilience, and unwavering spirit of the team, coupled with the strategic acumen of Coach Mbalangu, make us a compelling story in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. The journey has just begun, and the diehards are here to stay, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
